The Afterdays emerged from the mildly confusing ashes of John Your Mate, the indie outfit known for their melodic melancholy and lyrical storytelling about the everyday and the in between.
John (vocals and strumming), Tim (guitars) and Neil (bass) expanded the lineup by adding Lance (guitars and vocals) to the mix but then the band experienced a brief but dramatic split for entirely legitimate tax reasons. Paperwork was signed, forms were filed, and seconds later they triumphantly reformed under a new name: The Afterdays.
This reincarnation brings a louder, looser energy, jangly guitars, layered harmonies, and a touch of existential humour. They write about the little moments that shape us, the regret and hope that sit side by side, and the strange beauty of modern life. Imagine wistful British songwriting filtered through fuzzy amps and the feeling of looking back at your younger self in a slightly cracked mirror.
While John Your Mate built a reputation for heartfelt indie rock with a reflective edge, The Afterdays take that same spirit and turn the volume up a notch. The result is a sound that’s nostalgic yet forward-looking music for those trying to make peace with the past while still chasing what’s next.
They are currently writing new material, performing live, and proving that sometimes breaking up can be the best decision you ever make.
Waiting For The Punch - Let’s Not Pretend! — This Is a Shameless Grab for Your Attention
Yes, this is the part of the website where we talk about the new Afterdays album Waiting for the Punch, and yes, we’re absolutely going to hit you with it straight away, before you can get distracted by a notification, a sandwich, or your own reflection.
Consider this your official nudge, wink, and mild shove. The new album is out. It’s great. Go listen to it.
We could dress it up with fancy adjectives like “cinematic” or “genre-expanding” or “the sonic equivalent of a hug from someone tall,” but honestly, why waste time? You’re busy. We’re busy. The internet is basically one big shouting match and we’re trying to shout politely.
So here it is, without subtlety or shame. Click the album. Stream it loudly. Tell someone else to stream it even louder.
Thank you. We love you.
John, Tim, Neil and Lance.
